Howell, Michigan
Howell, the seat of Livingston County government, boasts one of the only downtowns to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of its downtown buildings have been lovingly renovated and restored, including the historical Livingston County Courthouse.
The Howell community boasts a wide variety of housing opportunities, from traditional neighborhoods in the heart of the city to subdivisions and sprawling tracts in the surrounding townships. There is good access to I-96 from three freeway exits, and work on a fourth at Latson Road is set to begin next year.
The Howell Public Schools District is the largest in Livingston County and one of the largest in the state, both in terms of geographic size and student population. Most of the schools in the district have been classified as exemplary.
The No. 1 tourist attraction in Livingston County — the Tanger Outlet Mall — is located in Howell Township.
There are a number of cultural opportunities available. The Livingston Arts Council is headquartered in The Opera House, a historic performance center in the heart of Howell’s downtown that also hosts many public and private functions. The Community Theatre of Howell is one of the premier performance groups in the region, with a variety of opportunities for people of all ages. The Friday night Concerts at the Courthouse series draws thousands.
Howell hosts a number of popular community activities, from a Farmers Market, annual Home Show, and outdoor concerts to full-scale festivals, including the popular Michigan Challenge Balloonfest, the beautiful Fantasy of Lights nighttime holiday parade, and the annual Melon Festival.
